AMC from Sri Lanka — Pathway, Costs in LKR & Timeline
By the Mostly Medicine team · reviewed by an AMC pass-graduate IMG on our team
A Sri Lankan MBBS/MBChB carries real weight in Australia — but two things catch most Colombo-based candidates off guard. First, studying in English at a Sri Lankan faculty does not exempt you from IELTS or OET, because Sri Lanka is not on AHPRA’s recognised-countries list. Second, the exam-side budget is realistically LKR 1.75–2.0 million, not the figures traded in Facebook groups.
Step 0 — confirm you’re eligible
- WDOMS-listed medical school — Sri Lanka’s state faculties (Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Ruhuna, Jaffna, Rajarata, Eastern, Wayamba and others, plus KDU) are long-established, but list membership is per-school and does change — confirm your own faculty at search.wdoms.org before you spend anything
- English test (assume you need one) — AHPRA accepts OET, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic; see the IELTS vs OET comparison and the caution below
- Recency of practice — long gaps out of clinical work raise questions later at registration; see the recency rules
- Clean standing with the SLMC — the Sri Lanka Medical Council is the regulator that will issue your Certificate of Good Standing
The free eligibility checker flags your specific gaps in about two minutes, before you spend a rupee.
What the SLMC actually does in this pathway
A common misreading is that you need SLMC clearance before the AMC will look at you. You don’t. The AMC assesses your primary medical qualification; the Sri Lanka Medical Council enters the picture at the registration end. Sri Lankan graduates take provisional SLMC registration, complete the one-year internship, then convert to full registration — and it is that full registration that AHPRA later wants evidence of, via a Certificate of Good Standing from the SLMC. AHPRA requires one from every regulator you have ever registered with, and these certificates typically expire in about three months, so time the request to your AHPRA application, not to the start of your prep.
Step 1 — MyIntealth verification (start this first)
The AMC uses ECFMG/Intealth’s MyIntealth platform — which replaced the older EPIC portal — for primary-source verification of your degree. It is a document check, not an exam, and the AMC requires it before assessing you. Fees are charged to establish a portfolio and then per credential verified, so check the current Intealth fee schedule. Verification runs through your university, and response times from Sri Lankan faculties vary — this is the single most common timeline-stretcher, so open your MyIntealth account and request verification before anything else. If a qualification of yours was already verified through EPIC, it still counts — you do not need to redo it.
The exams — what and where
| Exam | Format | Where Sri Lankan candidates sit it |
|---|---|---|
| AMC CAT 1 (MCQ) | 150 questions, computer-adaptive, one 3.5-hour session, 0–500 scale, 250 to pass | Pearson VUE centres — a Colombo centre has been available; check the current list at pearsonvue.com/amc |
| AMC CAT 2 (Clinical) | 16 assessed stations plus rest stations, in person | Australia only (Melbourne National Test Centre + approved sites). The online clinical option is not open to candidates residing overseas — budget travel, visa & accommodation |
Scoring details are on the pass-mark explainer, booking windows on 2026 exam dates, and the station-by-station clinical format in the clinical stations guide. Clinical exam series and seat numbers change — check the current AMC scheduling notice rather than assuming a fixed number of sittings per year.
The English trap Sri Lankan graduates fall into
Many Sri Lankan faculties teach and examine in English, and candidates reasonably assume that earns them an exemption. It generally does not. AHPRA’s non-test pathways (the recognised-country, combined-education and extended/advanced-education routes) require the study to have been taught and assessed in English in a country on AHPRA’s recognised-countries list — a list of roughly thirty countries and territories that does not include Sri Lanka. So plan and budget for an approved test unless AHPRA tells you otherwise in writing. Current minimum scores are set by the English language skills registration standard and were revised in 2026, so read the live standard on ahpra.gov.au before booking; our IELTS vs OET breakdown covers which test suits a working clinician better.
Costs in LKR
Approximate figures at ~235 LKR per AUD (early August 2026 — use live rates; verify fees on amc.org.au):
| Item | AUD | ≈ LKR |
|---|---|---|
| MyIntealth verification | ~A$220–400 | ~52,000–94,000 |
| AMC CAT 1 (MCQ) | ~A$2,920 | ~686,000 |
| AMC CAT 2 (Clinical) | ~A$3,000 | ~705,000 |
| English test | A$410–587 | ~96,000–138,000 |
| AHPRA application | ~A$760 | ~179,000 |
| Exam-side total (single attempt) | ~A$7,500–8,500 | ~1.75–2.0 million |
Add flights and accommodation for the clinical attempt in Australia, and remember a resit costs the full fee again. The complete breakdown (with the hidden costs) is on AMC exam total cost 2026, and the fee calculator converts everything to your currency. Visa options for the Australian leg are covered in the IMG visa pathway guide.
Study strategy for Sri Lankan graduates
Your clinical base is strong and your English is usually fine — the gaps are almost always Australian context: PBS and eTG-first therapeutics, conservative primary-care reasoning, and the “single best answer” MCQ style. Start with the trap patterns that catch IMGs, drill the free specialty-wise MCQ bank, and structure prep with the 16-week study plan. Most candidates working full-time as house officers or medical officers budget 4–6 months for Part 1.
The mechanics overlap heavily with neighbouring cohorts — the India guide covers shared gotchas like name mismatches across passport, degree and council documents, and pass rates by country puts South Asian performance in context.
Common mistakes from Sri Lanka
- Assuming English-medium study is an exemption — Sri Lanka is not a recognised country for AHPRA’s education pathways. Budget and book the test.
- Starting MCQ prep before MyIntealth verification — if verification stalls at your faculty, your booked timeline collapses. Verification first.
- Requesting the SLMC Certificate of Good Standing too early — these certificates lapse in months. Request it against your AHPRA lodgement date.
- Planning as if the clinical exam can be sat from Colombo — it is in person in Australia, and the online option excludes overseas residents. Travel and visa lead time belong in your plan from day one.

FAQ
Do I need SLMC registration before I can apply to the AMC?
No. The AMC assesses your primary medical qualification, verified through ECFMG/Intealth’s MyIntealth platform (which replaced EPIC; qualifications already verified through EPIC are still valid) — not your Sri Lanka Medical Council registration. SLMC matters later: AHPRA asks for a Certificate of Good Standing from every medical regulator you have been registered with, and SLMC certificates are typically only valid for about three months, so request yours close to the AHPRA application rather than years early. Confirm current SLMC and AHPRA requirements with each body.
Can I sit the AMC MCQ in Sri Lanka?
The AMC CAT MCQ runs at Pearson VUE centres worldwide, and a Colombo centre has been available to AMC candidates — but seat availability and the centre list change, so check the current Pearson VUE centre list at pearsonvue.com/amc before you plan around it. The clinical exam is different: it is sat in person in Australia.
My MBBS was taught in English — am I exempt from IELTS or OET?
Usually not. AHPRA’s education-based pathways require the qualifying study to have been taught and assessed in English in a recognised country, and Sri Lanka is not on AHPRA’s recognised-countries list. English-medium teaching at a Sri Lankan faculty therefore does not by itself exempt you — most Sri Lankan graduates still sit an approved English test. Check the current English language skills registration standard on ahpra.gov.au before assuming either way.
How much does the AMC pathway cost in Sri Lankan rupees?
Exam-side costs total roughly A$7,500–8,500 for a single-attempt run — approximately LKR 1.75–2.0 million at ~235 LKR per AUD (early August 2026; check live rates). The MCQ alone is ~A$2,920 (≈ LKR 686,000) and the clinical ~A$3,000 (≈ LKR 705,000). Fees change each cycle — verify current amounts on amc.org.au.
